Summer Cobbler Secrets

8 Aug

At Office Pretty we regularly talk about “investing” in clothes for the office. Part of adopting the investment approach is finding folks who can help you care for your most favorite clothes, shoes and accessories, so that they last a long time. This is a post about what I believe is the best kept secret of the well-dressed: the cobbler.

A few weeks ago I went on a business trip to Washington, D.C. Two things were certain about the trip:

1. The heat index was a billion degrees.

2. Meetings on Capitol Hill don’t get re-scheduled due to high heat indices.

So my favorite summer heels — incredibly comfortable black peep-toe Cole Haans — went all over that city with me. By the end, those pebbly sidewalks that criss-cross the Capitol greens had done significant damage to the heels on my favorite shoes. See Exhibit A.

Note that the pad on the heel was completely worn through (exposing the nail and causing an annoying “click” with every step) and frayed.

A quick visit to my cobbler — replacing the heel pad was only a $12 fix — solved the problem. See Exhibit B.

So, what can the cobbler do for you?

  • Repair purses, belts and other accessories. If you loose or gain weight, they can also add new holes to a belt so that it still fits.
  • Lots of pricier shoes come with leather soles that wear quickly; a cobbler can protect the original sole by covering it with a rubber layer that will exponentially extend the life of the shoes.
  • Replace the soles of shoes that are worn out.
  • Most cobblers also sell the tools you need to maintain shoes yourself, like polish and water-repellant (which you should definitely purchase if your city gets snow).

It is so refreshing to hear a fashionista suggest repairing wardrobe staples like favorite shoes, belts, purses! I’m not buying into the
‘disposable’ society we are living in especially regarding ‘investment’ pieces. Getting an experienced cobbler is a re-newing experience!
I love Office Pretty’s practical advice! Keep it coming!
