White is out, Fall is In

2 Sep

I am from the south, y’all, and in the south, Labor Day means two things: a three day weekend and it’s time to put away white until next year.

Although this may seem like an arbitrary rule, it actually has very practical roots: the weather. The white clothes you need to purge from your closet for the next eight months are items like thin tunics, white jeans, linen pants, sandals, etc. The combination of lightweight, summery (and even sheer) fabrics with the color white is quintessentially summer and shouldn’t be carried into the fall months. And (I’m sorry to say it), Labor Day signals the end of summer and thus the end of wearing some of your favorite white items for the season.

Since this weekend is your last chance to wear head to toe white, I pulled together a quick retrospective on some breezy white looks from spring / summer 2011.

Don’t worry! We’ll help you figure out the ever challenging winter white later this year and, of course, we’ll remind you when Memorial Day rolls around in the spring and it’s safe to once again wear your white linen blazer.

Coming up next week on OP: Laura and I have pulled together our must-have items for fall. We’ll be posting a whole week’s worth of wish lists. Can’t wait until then? Check out some of favorite fall finds on our Office Pretty Fall Pinterest Page. Hope to see you back here first thing Tuesday morning and happy shopping.
